A motion photo is a normal JPEG with a short MP4 video stored inside the same file. Your phone plays it; everything else shows a still. Once the file is on a computer, the video seems gone. It is not. This tool finds the MP4 inside the JPEG and saves it as a separate file, along with the clean still image.

Nothing is re-encoded, so the video is exactly what the phone recorded, at full quality. Works with Samsung Motion Photos and Google Pixel Motion Photos (Top Shot), including files named .MP.jpg.

How to get the video out

  1. 1

Copy the original file from your phone

Use a USB cable, Samsung Smart Switch, Google Photos “Download original”, or any transfer that keeps the file unchanged. Sending it through WhatsApp or most messaging apps strips the video.

  2. 2

    Drop the JPG here

    Several at once is fine.

  3. 3

    Download the MP4

You get the video and, separately, the still photo without the hidden data.

What is inside the file

The file starts with an ordinary JPEG. After the image’s end marker, Samsung and Google append a complete MP4 (about one to three seconds of video, sometimes with audio) and a small block of metadata that tells the phone where the video begins. Any program that reads JPEGs ignores the extra bytes, which is why the photo still opens everywhere while the video stays invisible.

What you get

  • The embedded MP4 video, byte-for-byte as recorded
  • The still photo as a plain JPEG, smaller than the original
  • Duration and sizes for each file

Limits to know about

  • If a file was shared through an app that re-saves images, the video is already gone and the tool will say so.
  • HEIC motion photos from recent Samsung phones are supported when the MP4 is appended; previews of the HEIC still only show in Safari.
  • GIF output is not offered because GIF would throw away most of the quality; convert the MP4 to GIF separately if you need one.

Privacy

This tool runs entirely in your browser. The file is read on your device by a background script, the result is built on your device, and nothing is transmitted to us or to anyone else. You can load this page, turn off your internet connection and the tool keeps working. There is no account and no quota.

Questions

Why does the tool say no video was found?

The file no longer contains the video. Messaging apps, email clients and some cloud services re-compress photos and drop the hidden MP4. Copy the original from the phone with a cable or download the original from Google Photos.

Does this work with iPhone Live Photos?

No. iPhones store Live Photos as two separate files, a HEIC or JPG and a MOV, so there is nothing hidden to extract. Export the Live Photo from the Photos app and the MOV comes with it.

Is the video quality reduced?

No. The MP4 is copied out exactly as the phone wrote it. Nothing is decoded or re-encoded.

Can I do many photos at once?

Yes. Drop a batch and each one gets its own download.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. The file is scanned in your browser and the video is cut out on your device.
