Apple Health export to Excel

Turn the giant export.xml into daily sheets and charts: steps, heart rate, sleep, workouts, weight and more.

or drop it here

export.zip from Health → your picture → Export All Health Data (or export.xml from inside it)

Apple will export everything the Health app knows about you, but what you get is export.xml: a single file that can run past several gigabytes, with one line per heartbeat sample. Excel cannot open it, text editors freeze, and the usual advice is to install Python. This tool reads the file as a stream in your browser, so it never has to fit in memory, and gives you a workbook with one sheet per data type, a daily summary, sleep by night and a workouts list.

Nothing is uploaded. Years of heart-rate data stay on your own machine.

How to export your Apple Health data

  1. 1

Open the Health app on your iPhone

Tap your picture or initials in the top right corner.

  2. 2

Scroll down and tap “Export All Health Data”

Confirm. Preparing the file can take from a few seconds to several minutes depending on how many years of Apple Watch data you have.

  3. 3

Save export.zip somewhere you can reach it

AirDrop it to a Mac, save it to Files → iCloud Drive, or send it to yourself. The zip is often 50 to 500 MB.

  4. 4

    Drop export.zip here

Use a desktop browser for large exports. The tool reads export.xml from inside the zip; the CDA file and GPX routes are left alone.

What is inside the file

The zip contains apple_health_export/export.xml, the main data; export_cda.xml, the same data in a clinical format; workout-routes/ with a GPX file per outdoor workout; and sometimes electrocardiograms/ with CSVs. In export.xml every sample is a <Record> with a type such as HKQuantityTypeIdentifierStepCount, a value, a unit, a source (iPhone, Apple Watch, a third-party app) and start and end times. Sleep is stored as periods labelled In Bed, Core, Deep, REM or Awake. Workouts are <Workout> elements with duration, distance and energy.

What you get

  • Overview: every data type with record count, unit, first and last day, total and daily average
  • Daily summary: one row per day with steps, distance, active and resting energy, exercise minutes, stand hours, flights, resting and average heart rate, HRV, SpO2, respiratory rate, weight, VO2 max and sleep hours, as available
  • Sleep: each night with time in bed, asleep, and Core / Deep / REM / Awake hours
  • Workouts: start, end, type, duration, distance, energy, average heart rate, source
  • Activity rings history, and a Sources sheet showing which device recorded what
  • A sheet per data type with daily samples, total or average, min and max
  • Charts: steps per day, resting heart rate, weight, active energy, sleep per night

Limits to know about

  • Per-sample rows (every single heartbeat) are not exported; sheets hold daily statistics. Export.xml for a long-time Watch owner has tens of millions of samples, more than Excel can open.
  • Steps and distance recorded by both iPhone and Apple Watch are both included. The Health app hides the duplicates; the export does not. The Sources sheet shows the split.
  • On iPhone and iPad, Safari may run out of memory on exports over roughly 1 GB. A laptop handles any size.

Privacy

This tool runs entirely in your browser. The file is read on your device by a background script, the result is built on your device, and nothing is transmitted to us or to anyone else. You can load this page, turn off your internet connection and the tool keeps working. There is no account and no quota.

Questions

How do I open export.xml in Excel?

Not directly; the file is far too large and Excel’s XML import flattens it badly. Drop export.zip on this page instead, and download the Excel workbook it builds. Each data type is a sheet with one row per day.

Can I get just my sleep data?

Yes. The Sleep sheet lists each night with In Bed, Asleep, Core, Deep, REM and Awake hours. Download that sheet alone as CSV.

How do I export heart rate or steps for a specific period?

Download the Heart Rate or Step Count sheet and filter the Date column in Excel. Each row is one day with the sample count, average or total, minimum and maximum.

Why does the export take so long to prepare on my iPhone?

Apple writes every sample ever recorded. Several years of Apple Watch wear means millions of lines, which takes minutes to generate and compress.

Is my health data uploaded?

No. The zip is decompressed and scanned inside your browser. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it works the same.

Do the workout GPS routes come through?

Not yet. The workouts sheet has every workout’s stats; the GPX route files stay in the zip. A route viewer is planned.
