How to export Apple Health data and read it

Everything the Health app has collected, from step counts to sleep stages to ECGs, can be exported in one go. The hard part is doing anything with the result. This guide walks through the export and the fastest way to get it into Excel.

Step by step

  1. 1

Health app → profile picture → Export All Health Data

The profile picture is top right on the Summary tab. Export All Health Data is at the bottom of that screen.

  2. 2

    Wait for export.zip

A progress bar runs while the file is built. Do not lock the phone; iOS may pause the job.

  3. 3

Move the zip to a computer

AirDrop to a Mac is quickest. Otherwise save to Files and sync through iCloud, Google Drive or a cable.

  4. 4

    Convert to Excel

Drop export.zip on the Apple Health export to Excel tool. Large files take a minute or two to scan; the progress bar shows how far along it is.

  5. 5

    Pick the sheets you need

Daily summary for a broad view, Sleep for nights, Workouts for sessions, or the sheet for any single data type.

Then open it

Apple Health export to Excel

Turn the giant export.xml into daily sheets and charts: steps, heart rate, sleep, workouts, weight and more.

Questions

Is there a way to export only one data type?

Not from the Health app; it is all or nothing. Convert the full export and keep the sheet you want.

Where is export.xml on iPhone?

Inside export.zip, in a folder called apple_health_export. You do not need to unzip it; the tool reads it from the zip.
