Telegram chat export to Excel

Open a Telegram chat or channel export as a spreadsheet, with who-said-how-much and a timeline.

or drop them here

result.json or messages.html from Telegram Desktop’s “Export chat history”, or the export folder zipped

Telegram Desktop can export any chat, group or channel, but the result is a result.json developers can read and nobody else can. Drop it here and you get a spreadsheet: one row per message with the date, sender, text, media type, reply and forward information, plus a per-sender tally and a messages-per-month chart.

Whole-account exports work too. Every chat in the export becomes rows in one Messages sheet with a Chat column, and a Chats sheet lists them with message counts and date ranges.

How to export a chat from Telegram

  1. 1

Open the chat in Telegram Desktop

Export is desktop only. Open the chat, group or channel you want.

  2. 2

Menu (⋮) → Export chat history

Untick photos, videos and files unless you want them. Text-only exports finish in seconds.

  3. 3

    Choose JSON

Pick Machine-readable JSON. The HTML format also works here but JSON keeps reactions and edit times.

  4. 4

    Drop result.json here

For an export of your whole account (Settings → Advanced → Export Telegram data), drop its result.json and every chat is included.

What is inside the file

Each message in the JSON has an id, date, sender, text (sometimes split into formatted pieces, which the tool joins back together), and optional fields for photos, files, stickers, polls, replies, forwards, edits and reactions. Service messages such as “X joined the group” are kept with type service.

What you get

  • Messages sheet: date, from, type, text, media, reply-to, forwarded-from, edited time, reactions, message id
  • By sender sheet: messages per person and their share of the chat
  • Chats sheet for whole-account exports: each chat with its type, count and first and last message dates
  • A messages-per-month chart
  • Download as Excel (all sheets), CSV per sheet, or JSON

Privacy

This tool runs entirely in your browser. The file is read on your device by a background script, the result is built on your device, and nothing is transmitted to us or to anyone else. You can load this page, turn off your internet connection and the tool keeps working. There is no account and no quota.

Questions

Can I search the messages?

Open the Excel file and use Find, or filter the Text column. Large chats with hundreds of thousands of messages open fine in Excel and LibreOffice.

Do photos and files come through?

The spreadsheet records that a message had a photo, video, voice note or file, and the file name where Telegram exported one. The media files themselves stay in your export folder.

What about messages from channels I only read?

Export the channel the same way as a chat. Posts appear with the channel as the sender.

Why are some dates in UTC?

JSON exports store the date in your device’s local time. HTML exports store it with a UTC offset in the hover text, which the tool converts to the same format.

Is my chat uploaded?

No. Everything is read and converted in your browser. Close the tab and nothing remains.
